Immanuel Beauty School

An opportunity for the disadvantaged to gain a foothold in a competitive industry

24

OUR SPECIALTY:

Certification courses in beauty and aesthetics, including make-up, nail and wax.

THE INNOVATION:

Persons from disadvantaged backgrounds such as the poor can receive sponsored training programmes, internships and employment in IBS’s network of beauty salons, filling a social gap as commercial beauty schools currently do not provide training sponsorship, internships, employment placement or assistance of any sort for them. IBS will also work closely with the social service agencies to counsel and mentor the beneficiaries so as to ensure their progress.

Besides practical lessons that the students will undergo to complement the theories studied, they will also acquire skills by working in an in-college service centre where they deal with real clients. This gives them a seamless transition from being a beauty student to a real-life beauty therapist. The inclusion of business subjects to promote and inculcate the entrepreneur spirits in the students helps them to gain a better understanding of the industry and the technical aspects of managing and operating a salon.

HOW WE STARTED:

Hazel Menon is the owner of Beauty Affairs Pte Ltd, which was established since 1989. She started as a fitness leader with Joanne Drew International in the mid 1980s and became a beauty therapist in the early 1990s. Hazel aims to extend a helping hand to the community by training individuals who may be needy or disadvantaged so that they can provide a livelihood for themselves by becoming a therapist in the beauty industry. One of the ways that Hazel hopes to do this is also to reach out to the youths through schools.

“I find that the lessons are very useful to me as it provides useful skills and knowledge that I will need when I go out to work in the beauty industry.”
